What is FEN?
A one-line text format that describes a position completely: where every piece stands, whose turn it is, castling rights, the en passant target and the move counters.
Are some positions rejected?
Yes. Positions that could not arise in a real game are refused — for example a pawn on the first or last rank, a missing king, or the side that just moved left in check.
